Monster Hunter Monster Spotlight: Tigrex

I think it’s start by covering the first monster to truly give me grief when I jumped into the series, the Tigrex. When I saw this thing on the cover of Monster Hunter Freedom Unite, I knew I was in for a brutal fight. From its massive, chomping jaws to its lunges and swinging tail, this wyvern is definitely one that relies on pure power. This was the first monster I faced in the game that actually made me nervous to fight when I first came across it. There was nothing fancy about the way it moved or fought. Its only goal was to crush the hunter. It can be one of the faster monsters to deal with if you aren’t careful, but when it’s enraged, that only makes it kick the speed and damage up a few notches.
The power behind this monster’s fury can even be felt while wielding its equipment as its weapons boast some of the highest raw damage in the games. If I were to address one shortcoming with this beast, it would be that I don’t find it to be all that smart. While enraged, there’s a moment where it can have its mouth latched onto a wall if the hunter moves out of the way that causes it to be stuck to a brief moment, leaving it wide open to attacks. From its appearance, you can tell it has physical characteristics of the Tyrannosaurus, but it unfortunately sometimes has the brains of one as well. If you’re an inexperienced hunter, it’s sure to give you one of your earliest challenges, but defeating it will give you the sense of what fight a truly threatening foe is like. It’s hard to believe it wasn’t in the vanilla version of Monster Hunter World, but luckily, it made its triumphant return in the Iceborne expansion. With its intro quest being named “Absolute Power”, rookie hunters should know what to expect as they come fang to face with this brutish wyvern.
